The CUarts Blog, the official blog of the Arts Initiative at Columbia University recently blogged a Q and A with a few of the 2012 student programmers about their process and what makes CUFF's night of Student Selects so special. Read more below.
The Columbia University Film Festival will screen a select group of films for a second year in a row at the RITS School of Arts in Brussels, Belgium on June 21-22, 2012. The event is supported by VAF (Flemish Film Fund), SACD-De Auteurs (Belgian author organization), Flemish Writers Guild and the Columbia University Club of Belgium and is developed in collaboration with the Film Division of Columbia University, School of the Arts.
In addition to the student film showcase from the Film Division, the festival will offer a master class with Ira Deutchman and Dan Kleinman, both professors at Columbia University's School of the Arts. Last year, the film festival attracted a wide variety of participants - film students, industry professionals, alumni from Columbia University, Yale University, Harvard University and the University of Chicago and from foreign clubs in Holland and France. Four out of the six films in competition for the Regional Student Academy Awards were from Columbia.
They were as follows: Hatch, written and directed by Christoph Kuschnig (5th year Directing). The Recorder Exam, written and directed by Bora Kim ('11) and co-produced by Gerry Kim ('11). The Runner, written and directed by Ana Lazarevic ('12 ), co-produced by Olivia Newman (5th year Screenwriting), Director of Photography Gregg Conde (5th year Directing) and edited by David Gutnik (5th year Screenwriting). Under, directed by Mark Raso (4th year Directing), written by Jake Crane (4th year Screenwriting) and Raso, and produced by Jean-Marceau Sécheret ('11).
At the award ceremony, three films were selected to go to Los Angeles for the national finals, and all three were from Columbia. The winners (announced in alphabetical order) were Hatch, Continued...
The 2nd season of CU Cinema: New Short Film from Columbia University School of the Arts premieres on Friday, April 27th at 8.30pm on WNYC Media Channel in New York City. CU Cinema is an 8 episode weekly television series that highlights some of the best short films produced by students at the prestigious film program. Each episode screens two short films and includes filmmaker interviews.
The series is produced by Mayuran Tiruchelvan and Brooke Sebold and each episode will be re-broadcast 2 times. Maureen Ryan is the faculty advisor. The WNYC Life Schedule can be found below.
